As Labrador City and Wabush were originally company towns, housing was built and owned by the iron ore mining companies. By the mid-1980s, residents had purchased much of the housing stock from the companies and housing availability and cost is now subject to market conditions. Labrador West has become a complex region with a number of people still working at IOC, as well as for other mining and exploration companies, mining support industries, municipal and provincial government departments and agencies, service industries and the non-profit sector.

According to 2011 Census data, Lab West boasts a high rate of home ownership with 84% of the population owning their home and only 16% renting, indicating stability of employment and thus of the population. A comparison of housing characteristics reveals the following: there are 3,590 occupied private dwellings of which 1,780 are single-detached housing; 60 apartment buildings (of 5 storeys or more); 295 moveable housing units (mobile/mini homes); and 1,450 are other dwelling types which includes row houses, semi-detached houses, duplexes and apartments under five storeys.

Housing prices are nearly 50% below the national average. Average housing prices for October 2015 are listed below.
