Fire suppression efforts continued overnight, and good progress has been made. However, the fire remains active and the evacuation order remains in effect. Forestry officials will reassess conditions this evening and provide a further update once that evaluation is complete.
Aerial and ground suppression efforts remain ongoing. Two water bombers are currently in place and ready to respond, with a third aircraft arriving from Happy Valley-Goose Bay to provide additional support. Two helicopters are actively targeting hotspots, while ground crews remain positioned to assist as conditions allow. The Labrador City Fire Department personnel are positioned in the Walsh River area and will remain active in that area throughout the day.
In addition, the Town’s The Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated since yesterday and municipal staff continue to work closely with partners and stakeholders to support the response.
Rain remains in the forecast, and we are hopeful it will significantly improve conditions.
We will continue to provide updates throughout the day as new information becomes available.
