Wildfire Update – July 7, 2026 

What’s New Today

Forestry reports the entire perimeter of the Walsh River fire has now been worked by crews.

No significant fire activity was observed yesterday despite the warm and dry conditions.

Yesterday evening, water bomber operations focused on interior hotspots within the fire area, rather than the perimeter, to further reduce the risk of flare-ups.

Forestry continues to report that suppression efforts remain on track and crews are making steady progress.

Residents may notice increased smoke at times today. Forestry advises that some smoke visible in the region may be associated with wildfire activity in Quebec, including the Bloom Lake area. Forestry remains aware of the situation and continues to monitor wildfire activity both within Labrador West and neighbouring jurisdictions.

To help residents manage the effects of wildfire smoke, free N95 masks are available today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the former Source location inside the Labrador Mall. Anyone who would like a mask is invited to stop by and pick one up.

Current Situation

Forestry crews, air support, and response partners continue suppression efforts in the Walsh River area.

With perimeter work now complete, crews are shifting their focus toward identifying and extinguishing remaining hotspots within the fire area. Helicopters and ground crews continue to monitor and address areas of concern, particularly in sections containing unburned timber within the fire perimeter.

Forestry reports that conditions remained stable yesterday, with no significant fire growth observed. Water bombers and helicopters continue to be used proactively to target hotspots and reduce the potential for increased fire activity during the current warm weather period.

Aircraft Activity

Residents may continue to see increased aircraft activity in the area. Water bombers and helicopters remain active in support of suppression efforts.

Boaters, anglers, and recreational users in the Duley Lake area are reminded to exercise caution and remain aware of water bomber and helicopter activity operating in and around the lake. Please maintain a safe distance from aircraft operations and follow any direction provided by emergency personnel.

Evacuation Status

The Evacuation Order remains in effect for the Walsh River Cabin Area.

The Evacuation Alert remains in effect for:

• Duley Lake
• Throne Lake
• Tamarack Golf Course Road Area

Forestry continues to monitor conditions closely throughout today. If favourable conditions continue, discussions regarding next steps and potential status changes are expected in the coming days.

The Town’s Emergency Operations Centre remains active and continues to work closely with Forestry and response partners.
