Wildfire Update – July 1, 2026 (Morning)

Overnight rainfall and continued suppression efforts appear to have significantly reduced fire activity in the Walsh River area.

Forestry officials report that the fire has shown little visible activity since the rain began overnight. While crews remain cautiously optimistic, assessments are ongoing and work continues throughout the day.

Today’s priorities include:

• Ground crews moving into the Walsh River area to conduct assessments and suppression work as conditions allow. • Forestry teams evaluating current fire conditions and identifying any remaining hotspots. • Labrador City Fire Department personnel continuing structure protection and property assessments in evacuated areas. • An Incident Management Team is arriving in Labrador West today to support coordination of wildfire response efforts.

The Town’s Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) remains active and municipal staff continue to work closely with Forestry, emergency responders, provincial officials, and community partners.

The evacuation order remains in effect at this time. Officials will continue assessing conditions throughout the day before making any decisions regarding re-entry into evacuated areas.

We understand residents are eager for information on returning to their properties. Public safety remains the priority, and any decisions regarding evacuation areas will be communicated as soon as they are made.

We are encouraged by the rainfall and improving conditions and thank residents for their continued patience and cooperation.
