Labrador City Wildfire Update – July 10 (11:30 a. m.)
What’s New Today
Forestry reports there has been very little, if any, growth on the Quebec border fire since yesterday.
Aerial suppression efforts completed yesterday were successful in slowing fire activity and helping to hold the fire within the areas identified by response officials.
While weather conditions are delaying aircraft operations today, Forestry advises the same conditions are favourable from a fire behaviour perspective and are helping to limit fire growth.
Forestry remains encouraged by the weather forecast over the coming days, including the potential for significant rainfall next week.
Current Situation
Forestry officials continue to monitor wildfire activity near the Quebec-Labrador border.
Officials advised this morning that suppression efforts completed yesterday were successful and that fire activity has remained limited since that time. Forestry indicated that today’s weather conditions are expected to help reduce fire behaviour and that they do not anticipate significant fire growth.
While today’s conditions may limit aircraft operations at times, officials noted that the weather is generally favourable from a wildfire management perspective.
Forestry will continue to assess conditions throughout the day and adjust suppression efforts as required.
Smoke Conditions
Over the weekend residents may continue to experience periods of smoke in Labrador West due to wildfire activity elsewhere in the region, including fires in Quebec.
Smoke levels can vary significantly depending on weather patterns and fire activity. Residents who are sensitive to smoke, including seniors, young children, and individuals with respiratory conditions, should consider limiting outdoor activity when smoke levels are elevated.
N95 masks remain available for pickup at the Labrador City Town Hall during office hours and the Fire Hall after hours, for residents who require them.
Evacuation Alert Status
The following areas remain under Evacuation Alert:
- Walsh River Cabin Area
- Duley Lake
- Throne Lake
- Tamarack Golf Course Road Area
Residents in Alert areas should continue to remain prepared should conditions change.
State of Emergency
While conditions continue to improve, the Town is extending its State of Emergency as a precautionary measure while Evacuation Alert areas remain in place and wildfire activity continues to be monitored throughout the region.
Looking Ahead
Forestry and emergency response partners will continue to monitor conditions closely over the coming days and maintain suppression efforts where required.
The Town’s Emergency Operations Centre remains active and continues to work closely with Forestry, emergency responders, and provincial partners.
At this time, conditions remain stable and there are no anticipated changes to alert areas. Unless there is a significant change in conditions or new information that requires public notification, no further public updates are planned at this time.
We thank residents for their continued patience, cooperation, and support throughout this response.
