Nick McGrath moved to Labrador City in 1978 where he had accepted a position as chef in a new restaurant; after a year at Harry’s Restaurant he accepted the position of Executive Chef with Twin City Services Ltd, where he remained for 16 years climbing through the ranks and becoming a partner. In 1995 he ventured out on his own and for the next 12 years he successfully owned and operated several businesses including restaurants, bars, retail store as well as a martial arts studio. In 2007 Nick decided it was time to make the change back into private employment.
He was not in Labrador West very long when he realized this was his new home and he wanted to get involved. There are not many places or organisations in Labrador West that he has not been involved with either directly or indirectly some of which include: the Labrador West Rowing Association, Quaniniche Scuba Club, Carol Players, Northern Lights Theatre Groups, Labrador West Music Festival Committee, Shotokan Karate Club, Labrador Grenfell Health and the Roman Catholic Church, along with the Labrador West Tourism Association, Hospitality NL and was instrumental in the revitalisation of Destination Labrador.
In 2009, Nick was elected to the Labrador City Town Council and served for 2 years prior to winning the Provincial Election and becoming the MHA for Labrador West. During his 4 years as MHA he filled several portfolios as Minister.
Nick has been recognized in several capacities for his dedication and determination not only to his hometown of Labrador West but to all of Labrador, including: Gwen Ryan Award (Volunteer of the Year); Builders Award (Town of Labrador City Volunteer Recognition); Golden Umbrella Award (HNL Volunteer Award); Restaurateur of the Year Award; Reg Harte Memorial Award; President’s Award (LWRA Volunteer Award); Coxswain of the Year Award; Marie Greene Award (Business of the year Award), and most recently he was nominated and accepted the nomination for the Labradorians of Distinction Award.
