The Town of Labrador City has heard the concerns and questions raised by residents regarding the recent removal of the playground equipment at Al Thoms Recreation Area, and we want to provide some additional context.<\/p>\n

The playground equipment had identified safety deficiencies and could no longer remain in place in its existing condition. The safety of residents, particularly children using our recreational amenities, must be our first consideration.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Al Thoms Recreation Area (often referred to as Indian Point), has also been part of a longer-term recreation planning process for a number of years. The 2019 Labrador West Parks and Trails Masterplan identified challenges with the existing playground location, including drainage issues, and proposed a broader redevelopment of the area. Importantly, while that concept contemplated removal of the existing playground, it also envisioned a new nature-inspired play area as part of the future redevelopment of Al Thoms Recreation Area, along with trails, waterfront access, open recreational space and other amenities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
There is currently no funded project to immediately replace the playground equipment that was removed. However, the Town recognizes from the feedback received that playground and recreational opportunities in this area continue to be important to residents and families.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The timing of this discussion is also helpful as Labrador City is currently developing its new Strategic Plan. The draft plan is still under review and will be presented to Council for its consideration. One of the directions currently proposed is the development of a phased Parks, Trails and Recreation Investment Plan that would identify priorities for recreation facilities, trails and year-round recreation opportunities.<\/p>\n

If supported by Council, that process would provide an opportunity to review existing plans, including the 2019 Parks and Trails Masterplan, against today’s community needs and priorities and consider the future direction of Al Thoms Recreation Area \/ Indian Point as part of Labrador City’s broader recreation investment planning.<\/p>\n

We also recognize that the removal of the equipment should have been communicated to residents in advance. We can do better in that regard<\/strong>, and the Town is taking steps internally to improve communication around visible changes to municipal facilities and services.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n We appreciate the residents who have taken the time to raise questions and share their perspectives.
