Wildfire Update – July 8, 2026
What’s New Today
Forestry has advised that the Walsh River fire remains stable, with crews continuing to make progress on suppression efforts.
Forestry advised that the Evacuation Order for the Walsh River Cabin Area will remain in place at this time while crews continue suppression efforts and monitor conditions closely.
Three water bombers, helicopters, ground crews, and structural protection resources remain available in Labrador West.
Forestry continues to monitor wildfire activity in Quebec, including a fire approaching the Labrador border area. Additional mapping and fire behaviour assessments are underway. Officials will continue to monitor closely.
Current Situation
Forestry reports that suppression efforts at the Walsh River fire continue to progress and crews remain focused on identifying and extinguishing remaining hotspots within the fire area.
Officials advised that a small spot fire outside a containment line was quickly identified and contained yesterday with the assistance of helicopter and water bomber support. This reinforced the need for continued vigilance in the Walsh River area, particularly given the dry conditions experienced over the past several days.
Forestry has indicated that while conditions have improved somewhat, they would like to see one more day of favourable weather before considering any changes to the current evacuation measures.
Forestry continues to emphasize that resources remain in place to support rapid response should fire activity increase.
Evacuation Status
The Evacuation Order remains in effect for the Walsh River Cabin Area.
The Evacuation Alert remains in effect for:
- Duley Lake
- Throne Lake
- Tamarack Golf Course Road Area
Residents in Alert areas should continue to remain prepared should conditions change.
Looking Ahead
Forestry’s focus remains on safely managing today’s conditions and continuing suppression efforts in the Walsh River area. Further discussions regarding next steps and potential changes to evacuation measures are expected following additional assessments over the next 24 hours.
The Town’s Emergency Operations Centre remains active and continues to work closely with Forestry and emergency response partners.
